COURSE DESCRIPTION

The start is near the Interpretive Center, in Afton State Park. It is a hilly, 25K loop (two loops for the 50K), winding through the park's trail system. For the most part, the trail is on well-established footing through the woodlands and prairie. There are long climbs, rising from the river bottom, up rocky ravines, and down again. Please be careful of your footing, especially on the downgrade.

PARKING

Parking will be available in the lots adjacent to the Interpretive Center in the Park. Do not park on the side of the roadway. A Minnesota State Parks pass is required. A single-day pass will be issued to you at race number pick up. Please carpool with friends if you can! The park is open to the public during the event, and parking resources will be strained. Please support our great Minnesota State Park System by purchasing an Annual State Park - Parking Pass. By doing this you not only support the entire state park system, you also increase the dollar amount that we are able to donate to the park as the Afton Trail Run pays for every participants vehicle that does not have a state park permit. You can purchase an annual permit by phone by calling 1-888-MINNDNR. Follow this link for more details. http://www.dnr.state.mn.us/state_parks/permit.html

RACE RULES

1. NO LITTERING. This is a state park, and we cannot leave it messy. Leave your trash as close to the aid stations as possible.
2 NO SHORTCUTS. Be sure to check in at each aid station, and get your number recorded.  Failure to do so may result in disqualification. It is YOUR responsibility to verify that your number has been recorded. If you find yourself off course, go back to the last trail marker before continuing.
3 IF YOU DECIDE TO DROP OUT OF THE RACE, let one of the race volunteers know. The course is long, difficult, and remote in places, and we don't want anyone getting lost. If you drop, and don't tell us, we will assume you are lost, and we will go looking for you.
4 YOUR RACE NUMBER MUST BE SHOWN AT ALL TIMES, ON THE FRONT OF YOUR BODY. This is to ensure that we get you properly checked in at aid stations, for identification at the finish line, and for photos.
5. NO RUNNER MAY SWITCH TO THE SHORTER COURSE AFTER THE RACE HAS BEGUN. This can be done anytime before the close of packet pickup, however. Please be sure to notify the race director if you desire to switch from the 50K to the 25K. There will be no refund of any fees, for any reason.
>6. WE WILL BEGIN CLOSING THE COURSE AT 10:30 a.m.  Starting at the 25K aid station, the sweeps will begin taking down the course and aid stations: an 9 hour time limit.
7. BE SAFE AND HAVE FUN.  This is the most important rule.  Push yourself, but please use common sense and know your limits.  This race is often held under extreme heat and finishing a race is not worth hurting yourself!

WEATHER

We expect this to be a hot weather race, and we encourage you to carry water. Some years it is not only hot, but also very humid. Rain and thunderstorms are possible. Stay hydrated!

TIPS

PACE YOURSELF AND HYDRATE. It's going to be a long, difficult course, and it will probably be hot. Drink plenty of fluids. There will be plenty of water, sports drink, and Coke available at most aid stations. Carry water! 50K runners: Eat salty foods and/or take electrolyte replacements to keep your energy levels up and your electrolytes in balance. Fresh fruit will also be available at most aid stations.
BE COURTEOUS. If you need to answer nature's call, please step off the course and go behind a tree. Do not leave pape r in the park. If you can pack it in, you can pack it out - use a plastic bag. And be careful if you do step off the course, as there's a lot of poison ivy out there.
TIE YOUR SHOES. It can be muddy, and people have been known to lose their shoes. You may want to consider wearing trail gaiters, which will help keep your shoes on and trail debris out.
LEAVE ADEQUATE SPACE between you and the person ahead of you. If you follow too closely, you may not be able to see rough footing or hazards ahead. No trailgating! ;-)
WATCH YOUR FOOTING. The trail may be rough in places, and the horses have been out and left their marks. Some places are very steep, and there can be loose gravel or stones. Be careful!
CARRY WATER IF YOU CAN. Some of the aid stations are as much as 3.8 miles apart. On a hot, humid, day, being without water for that long can be hazardous to you health.
IF YOU WANT TO LEAVE A DROP BAG IN THE START/FINISH AREA, please identify that bag with your race number. 50K runners will pass through this area at the 25K turnaround.
CHECK THE BOARD IN THE FINISH TENT for door prize winners. You may win a cool prize. Results will also be posted in this area as they become available.
ALTITUDE SICKNESS will not be a problem, but there will be an abundance of hills to keep you entertained.
HYDRATE! HYDRATE! HYDRATE! HYDRATE! HYDRATE! Need we elaborate? ;-)
